Tips and Tricks - WHM/CPANEL: Setting up a
second shared IP address (or more)
Shared IP Addresses::
If you are a reseller, VPS or dedicated server owner you know that
there is a master IP address which your accounts share. This is
great because you do not have to buy an IP address for each of your
sites to run, and IP addresses are scarce and expensive. However,
you may ask if there is a way to setup a second shared IP address in
your Cpanel/WHM so you can point SOME accounts to your primary IP and
some accounts to another. The answer is a big yes.
Step one: Setup a reseller account
Ok first thing to do is setup a
reseller account in the WHM.
Let's say for example your master domain on the server is rabbit.com
In the WHM logon as root
goto CREATE A NEW ACCOUNT
call its domain two.rabbit.com
Ok now once you have that account created you can turn it into
a reseller account. In the WHM look for
RESELLER CENTER
Now add reseller priviledges for two.rabbit.com
Poof two.rabbit.com is a reseller account
Now click on RESELLER CENTER AGAIN.
two.rabbit.com should
be listed in the pull-down menu's as a reseller account.
Step two: Enable the second IP
Ok asuming you purchased or have a free IP available on your server,
contact
support to add one if you do not, click on RESELLER CENTER
At the bottom where is says reseller modifications highlight
two.rabbit.com
Click on MANAGE IP DELEGATION
Click a free IP for your reseller to own
Go back to the RESELLER CENTER
again, hightlight
two.rabbit.com again and click on
MANAGE MAIN SHARED IP
Select the IP you just enabled.
You now have two shared IP addressed on your system!
Step three: Changing accounts to the new shared IP
Return to the RESELLER CENTER
Change ownership of the sites you want to change to
two.rabbit.com
Now return to the master WHM MENU
Under IP FUNCTIONS look for
CHANGE SITES IP ADDRESS and
click on it.
Select any site you just changed ownership for to
the new shared IP. You are done. Please note it can take
several
hours for a new IP address to work and a site may appear down
for a short while when you alter the IP
Setting up even more shared IPs:
Repeat the steps above, setting up another reseller account for each
of the shared IPs you want to make.
